He sat with me in the dark room
The war was striking everywhere. I remember the night the bombs fell close to our house: we hid in the inner room, and our neighbours’ children were crying. I was trembling, but in my heart a prayer was beginning to take shape without my realising it.
I prayed: “Lord, if you are there, I want to know you.” I did not know exactly who I was speaking to, but something in the darkness answered me. I felt a warmth spread through my chest, and my racing heart grew calm. The planes kept circling, but the fear inside me was gone.
A few weeks later I found clips about Christ and my journey began. I discovered that God was not far away that night; he was sitting with me in that dark room. The mountains of Yemen cannot be shaken, and the God who made them has shown me that he cannot be shaken either.
“for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?’”
