Go Into Your Room and Shut the Door

Your first seven days: Day 3.

“But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

Matthew 6:6

Reflection

Perhaps you think prayer needs polished words, a lot of time or the right conditions. But Jesus taught his disciples something simple: go into your room, your private room, shut the door, and pray to your Father.

This verse is a special comfort for anyone who cannot pray in front of others. Your heavenly Father sees in secret, and he hears the prayer no one else hears, even if it is only a whisper or a sigh.

When Jesus says your Father “will reward you” (some translations add “openly”), this is not a promise of a reward that people will see today, or that your troubles will go away. It is an assurance that your prayer in secret is never wasted: your Father sees it and honours it at the time he chooses.

Prayer is honest conversation with God. Speak to him in your own words, as you would to a father who loves you, and tell him simply what is on your heart: thank you, forgive me, help me. And if you can't find the words, the Holy Spirit himself helps you in your weakness and intercedes for you in ways you cannot put into words (see Romans 8:26).

A question to reflect on

When and where could you be alone with God each day, even for a few minutes?

Today's step

Today, spend three minutes alone with God somewhere quiet, and say three things to him: thank you, forgive me, help me. With each one, name one thing. If you can't find a place to be alone, pray silently in your heart. Your Father hears you there too.

Prayer

Father who is in secret, thank you for hearing me where no one else can. Teach me to speak to you every day, simply and honestly. Amen.
