A Way of Escape

Your first seven days with Christ: Day 4.

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

1 Corinthians 10:13

Reflection

In your first days you may be surprised to find that old habits are still there: anger, hurtful words, or things you are ashamed of in private. You may ask: was my faith real?

Being tempted does not mean you haven't believed. All believers are tempted, and Christ himself was tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin (see Hebrews 4:15). Today's verse gives you three truths: what you are going through is common to all people, so you are not alone in it; God is faithful, so he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear; and with the temptation he provides the way of escape, so that you can endure it.

Learn to look for the way out early, before the temptation grows strong: leave the place, switch off the phone, or speak to God at once in your heart. And if you fall, don't stay where you fell. Come back to God straight away and confess your sin to him. He is faithful and just, and he forgives you and cleanses you (see 1 John 1:9). His forgiveness does not rest on your success, but on what Christ did for you on the cross.

Which temptation comes back to you most often? And where might the way out of it be?

Today, pick one temptation, decide in advance on one small step you will take when it comes, and then pray about it.

Prayer

Lord, you are faithful. Give me strength to flee from temptation, and eyes to see the way out that you open for me. And if I fall, bring me back to you quickly. Amen.
