The Story of God's Love in Five Minutes
The shortest and greatest story: God who loves, humanity who turned away, and Christ who came to bring us back. Five minutes, and nothing is asked of you except to read honestly.
You know how someone feels when they come home after years away: the same road, the same door, but a trembling heart. Is there still a place for me? Will I be welcomed? The Bible tells a story like this, but it is the story of all humanity with God. And at its end is good news: the door is open, and the Father is waiting.
1. God who loves
“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”
The story does not begin with us, but with God. He made us, not because he needs us, but because he loves. He made us to know him, to live close to him, and to find joy in him.
2. What broke the relationship?
But we chose our own way, away from him. The Bible calls this sin: not just small mistakes, but a heart that wants to live as if God did not exist. None of us is outside this picture: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God...” (Romans 3:23)
And sin is no small matter, because it separates us from God, the source of life:
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Notice that the verse itself does not end with death, but with the gift.
3. What has God done?
God did not wait for us to fix ourselves and come back to him. He came to us:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Jesus Christ came and lived among us without sin, then died on the cross for us, carrying the sins we cannot carry. And God's love is shown in that he did this while we were still far from him: “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
And the story did not end at the tomb:
“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures...”
Christ's resurrection is God's declaration that death no longer has the last word, and that the way to him is now open.
4. A gift, not a wage
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
No one can earn God's favour by their works, however good and sincere they are. Salvation is a gift from God, and a gift cannot be bought or earned; it can only be received. That is why no one can boast, and no one need despair.
5. The invitation: to turn back and to trust
How is this gift received? At the very start of his teaching, Jesus summed it up in two words: repentance and faith, as he called people to repent and believe in the Gospel (see Mark 1:15). Repentance means turning back to God, confessing your sin and wanting to leave the path that has taken you away from him. Faith means trusting Christ and what he has done for you, and relying on him rather than on yourself.
No one is asking you to decide today. Faith cannot be forced, bought or inherited; it is the heart's free response to God's invitation. Take your time, read, and ask.
What does this mean for me today?
It means your story is not over, whatever your past. God knows you, loves you, and has opened the way to himself for you in Christ. And the first step you can take today is to speak to him honestly.

God, if this is true, show me. I want to know you as you really are. Open my eyes to see your love, and my heart to understand what Jesus Christ has done. Amen.
