God's Hand on My Shoulder in the Darkest Nights

On that night when the pain would not sleep, when the room was silent and your heart was crying out, perhaps you did not feel an unseen hand on your shoulder. But Psalm 23 was not written by someone who never knew distress. David knew the taste of fear, of being hunted and of loss, and still he wrote, “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1).

In the same psalm, David does not ignore the dark valley; he calls it by its name: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me” (Psalm 23:4). Notice that he did not say God brought him out of the valley at once. He said, “you are with me.” This is how David found God present in the valley before he saw him on the mountaintop.

Faith does not mean you will never go through dark nights, or that the pain will vanish overnight. But it does mean you are not alone in those nights. The Shepherd who knows you does not leave you when you are weak, and “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).

Putting It into Practice

  1. Tonight, before you sleep, read Psalm 23 slowly, and pause at the words “for you are with me”.
  2. Tell God in your own simple words what is hurting you, without dressing it up; he hears honest prayer.
  3. Don't carry the pain alone: share it with someone you trust, or send us a prayer request under a pseudonym if you prefer.

If your pain is so heavy that you are thinking of harming yourself, or you are in danger right now, contact your local emergency services straight away or someone you trust who is near you, and read what to do if you are in danger. Your life is precious to God.
