A Living Hope

Your First Seven Days with Christ: Day 7.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead...”

1 Peter 1:3

Reflection

Seven days have passed. Perhaps they were joyful days; perhaps they were hard and full of questions. The last message in this series is about hope.

Peter wrote these words to believers who were exiles, scattered across many lands. They were going through various trials, and they were insulted and suffered for the name of Christ (see 1 Peter 1:1, 6 and 4:14–16). He did not promise them that the suffering would end soon. But he reminded them that they had a living hope, because it rests on a real event: the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Christian hope is not a wish that circumstances will improve. It is confidence that the living Christ is with you now, and that the God who raised him from the dead will complete what he has begun in you (see Philippians 1:6). In the next verse Peter goes on to say that this hope leads us to an inheritance that is imperishable, kept in heaven (see 1 Peter 1:4). That is why you can face tomorrow, whatever it holds, with a heart that does not give up.

Prayer

Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, I bless you, because according to your great mercy you have caused me to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Keep me firm in you, complete your work in me, and guard me by your power to the end. Amen.
