Nothing Will Be Impossible with God

The Third Sunday of Advent.

“For nothing will be impossible with God.” And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Luke 1:37-38

This week's reading: Luke 1:26-38.

Reflection

A young girl in a small town whom nobody notices. An angel comes to her with a message too big for the mind to hold: she will give birth to a son, and he will be the Saviour God has promised.

Mary did not pretend she understood. She asked honestly how this could be (see Luke 1:34). And God was not angry at her question; he answered her. So faith is not the absence of questions. It is bringing your questions to God and then trusting his word. And so, in the end, she said: let it be to me according to your word.

Perhaps today you look at your life and see closed doors: at home, at work, or in a long time away from home. Notice what this promise says and what it does not say. It does not promise that everything you hope for will happen. But it declares that God is able to fulfil what he has promised, and that he fulfilled his greatest promise when he sent his Son into the world. If he has done that, he is able to carry you through what you do not understand today.

A question to reflect on

What honest question are you bringing to God today? Can you tell it to him just as it is?

This week, tell God your question in your own words, then pray Mary's words: let it be to me according to your word. And if you write your question down, do not leave it where others can see it.

Prayer

O God, you are able to do all things, and you are faithful in your promises. My heart is full of questions, and you know them all. Teach me to trust your word when I do not understand everything, and to say, like Mary: let it be to me according to your word. In Jesus' name, Amen.
